“Tarana Akbari, 12, screams in fear moments after a suicide bomber detonated a bomb in a crowd at the Abul Fazel Shrine in Kabul on December 06, 2011. ‘When I could stand up, I saw that everybody was around me on the ground, really bloody. I was really, really scared,’ said the Tarana, whose name means ‘melody’ in English. Out of 17 women and children from her family who went to a riverside shrine in Kabul that day to mark the Shiite holy day of Ashura, seven died including her seven-year-old brother Shoaib. More than 70 people lost their lives in all, and at least nine other members of Tarana’s family were wounded”

On June 11th 1963, Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, sat down in the middle of a busy intersection in Saigon, covered himself in gasoline and He then ignited a match, and set himself on fire. Đức burned to death in a matter of minutes, and he was immortalized in a famous photograph taken by a reporter who was in Vietnam in order to photograph the war. All those who saw this spectacle were taken by the fact that Duc did not make a sound while burning to death. Đức was protesting President Ngô Đình Diệm’s administration for oppressing the Buddhist religion.

I learnt about this the other day and watched the footage in Humanities, how amazing not one sound came out of him.

Que desespero era aquele… Podia sentir todo o corpo entorpecido, sonolento, fraco. Era como se algo o segurasse, até os pulmões teimavam em obedecê-lo.

-….M-Mãe?

Chamou, inutilmente. A voz rouca não teve intensidade suficiente. A pobre criatura não soube o que fazer, não tinha amparo, nem os membros respondiam ao seu comando. Melancolia, agonia, estava sozinho… haviam deixado-o sozinho. Por quê? O que estava acontecendo? O que havia acontecido? O coração se apertou, olhava o teto do quarto – seria mesmo aquele seu quarto?- sem esperanças.

Foi o som de uma sirene de ambulância que tirou-o do torpor: ele soube que tinha que lutar, não podia deixar aquela peste peçonhenta e brumosa tomar conta. O esforço colossal que fez fazia seus músculos protestarem em dor, mas logo vieram os primeiros resultados - pôde virar-se e ver o criado mudo. Bilhete.
